I was selected as a Roy W. Howard Fellow for AZCIR as part of a year-long investigative reporting fellowship supported by The Scripps Howard Fund. During this time, I helped continue AZCIR’s coverage of domestic extremism as part of a collaboration with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism’s Howard Center for Investigative Reporting. On my own I also leveraged my geo-spatial skills to quantify, in new ways, the damage caused by holes in Arizona’s rural groundwater regulations.

I was brought on as a member of Hearst’s data team for the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express News. We worked to help integrate data into more types of coverage across both newsrooms by collaborating with, and providing educational opportunities for, reporters. From the Houston Chronicle side, I also reported stories that visualized data in ways that would allow readers to explore their city in novel ways with an eye to advance discussion about the most important issues to Houstonians.

During the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic, I took a leave of absence from my master’s program because I was recruited to help report on the spread of the coronavirus in prisons and jails across the U.S. as part of the massive newsroom-wide effort to track the virus. This project won the newsroom the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service.

I was admitted as a member of the inaugural cohort for Cronkite’s Master of Arts in Investigative Journalism. Before graduating in August 2021, I focused my attention on the use of visual elements in large collaborative investigative projects, particularly surrounding data and mapping, but also including photo and video. Our master’s capstone project, Little Victims Everywhere, included many of these elements, and won multiple student awards including the Shaufler Prize for reporting on under-represented communities.
